Education
One key component of the organization’s mission is informing and educating members and the public about 19th century American brass band history, traditions, instruments, and performance practices.
Each year, the band members learn music that is new to the group. This provides an opportunity for the musicians to continue building their knowledge of music from the period. Understanding the origins of the music and performance practices helps the musicians provide a more authentic musical experience for audiences.
During performances, audiences are treated to brief comments that provide perspective to the music being performed. Information on people and events is intended to build awareness of the role brass bands served during the period. Band members are also available for conversations about the instruments and experience of performing the music.
Our website includes brief articles that provide historical information about American brass bands. We hope that you take a few minutes to read about the instrument makers, instrument designs, and the people who were important to the American Brass Band movement.
